To define leadership, we must frame it. To frame it, we identify defining characteristics.
1. Focuses on influence and communication to deliver results;
2. Is built on trust with those who follow;
3. Incites motivational action towards a vision; and
4. Implies removal of obstacles to provide success as final step for leadership definition.
These characteristics are key. While there may be others, these are the ones I have found to provide a framework of understanding leadership.
So, my leadership definition is as follows:
Leadership, while focusing on influential communication, motivational techniques, obstacle removal, and team trust, delivers a specific successful result that aligns with a predefined vision or objective.
Leadership is necessary in all organizations to deliver quality change during competitive times. Leaders may want to establish a leadership definition within their own context to find a version that applies to the team environment.
