What leader can be successful without clear communication? Strong influential leaders should practice clear communication in all media as follows: Leadership is communication.
Proofreading tends to fall short in today’s fast-paced business environments. Leadership cannot expand within an organization without clear communication. I identify four purposes for communications:
Great leaders will identify the purpose and create an objective for each communication. Clear communications cannot exist without a purpose and an objective. Follow up each communication to ensure the correct message is comprehended by the recipient. This goes a long way to ensure any misunderstandings and delays in expected responses and/or actions. Thanks.

An active leader is one who does not sit in an office. The active leader chooses to engage with team members to actively delegate and negotiate duties. An active leader provides a strong vision, plan, and prioritized work list to deliver to the organization’s objectives. An active leader is very open and honest, thus building a foundation for trustworthiness among the team. An active leader communicates clearly and directly while also accepting criticism to improve self-development. The active leader provides team members opportunities for self-development as well, while eventually providing the foundation for each team member to be a strong leader.
The active leader loves change and is a “Monday” person. What is a Monday person? One that is positive and arrives to work with strong motivation to create a weekly and daily agenda aimed at guiding the team towards small victories that will align to the organization’s vision. An active leader strives to engage with strong compassion and enthusiasm.
Active leaders coach team members to grow into leaders rather than direct them as a boss. An active leader is a critical thinker during the coaching process. They should be able to identify team members' strengths and weaknesses to drive optimal results toward the corporate vision.
And lastly, for today’s influential leadership blog, my favorite topic, an active leader must be an influential active leader and provide a level of positive persuasion that drives team members towards successful results. Influential leadership, as we remember from a previous leadership blog, while focusing on influential communication, motivational techniques, obstacle removal, and team trust, delivers a specific successful result that aligns with a predefined vision or objective.
Active leadership is necessary in all organizations to deliver quality change during competitive times. Active leaders can add many other characteristics to this list above, but I like to keep it simple to start. Short, yet powerful, lists of characteristics can provide a quicker understanding of the active leader foundation. Thanks.

Leader influence is much different from authority. When you look at the leadership styles (autocratic, bureaucratic, charismatic, democratic/participative, laissez-faire, and transactional, you realize that style relies on influence or authority. Autocratic leaders, they use authority with no input from staff to make decisions. They direct staff to perform, and influence is rarely necessary. While extremely efficient, it tends to lead to high turnover and additional organizational costs. Looking at the popular charismatic style, this is the primary style assumed when discussing influential leadership. Why? Well, in today's business world, organizations tend to be structured like onions. That is right, sound familiar? They have layers and add in matrices as well, and leaders tend to work with teams that do not directly report to the leader. Enter leader influence.
Leader influence spans many characteristics. Starting with expectations, leaders should set the boundaries for the team, so they understand what is expected. Aligning team direction to the organization’s vision and objectives is key as well. Here are six key factors when creating an influential list for a project:
Why only six with so many other characteristics that impact leadership influence? Well, in my experience, these six have been key to delivering both small and large projects while influencing teams. The overall list will vary, and that is OK! Adapt as necessary to your leadership style and needs. Just have a list that makes sense to deliver and influence. Thanks.

To define leadership, we must frame it. To frame it, we identify defining characteristics.
1. Focuses on influence and communication to deliver results;
2. Is built on trust with those who follow;
3. Incites motivational action towards a vision; and
4. Implies removal of obstacles to provide success as final step for leadership definition.
These characteristics are key. While there may be others, these are the ones I have found to provide a framework of understanding leadership.
So, my leadership definition is as follows:
Leadership, while focusing on influential communication, motivational techniques, obstacle removal, and team trust, delivers a specific successful result that aligns with a predefined vision or objective.
Leadership is necessary in all organizations to deliver quality change during competitive times. Leaders may want to establish a leadership definition within their own context to find a version that applies to the team environment. However, looking at the characteristics of leadership will aid in providing the definition one pursues. Visit www.bleadersedge.com for more leadership information. Thanks.
